How to Pick the Right Watermelon

Watermelon season runs from May – September but this range can differ depending on where you live. This is when the Watermelon is at its freshest and most ripe.

There are different varieties of watermelons, particularly seeded and seedless. Seedless watermelons are usually smaller, more expensive, and are slightly underdeveloped meaning their seeds have not grown to full size. For the recipe we used seedless but either works just fine.

Just because we are in peak watermelon season doesn’t mean there isn’t a dud or two that made it’s way to the grocery store. If your local farmers market grows watermelons that are a great place to check too because fresh and local is always best.

It can be hard to tell what you’re working with when you come across a watermelon because you can’t see the insides until you open them and see for yourself. There are, however, some tricks that will help the odds be more in your favor of choosing a juicy and perfectly ripe watermelon.

Look for any major bruises, gashes, or dents on the skin of your watermelon. The exterior of a watermelon is tough but any serious damage on the outside could lead to damage on the inside. We next recommend picking up the watermelon and feeling it for its weight. Like other fruits and vegetables, it should feel heavy for its size. That’s a sign of a juicy watermelon that’s perfect for an iced watermelon matcha latte.

Finally, look for a creamy yellow patch called the “ground spot”. This indicates that watermelon sat on the ground and ripened in the sun. This is crucial, and all ripe watermelons will have one regardless of its variety or size. Good to know!

How to Store Watermelon

If you bought your watermelon cold, keep it cold by storing it in the refrigerator. If not, keep it at room temperature until ready to cut and enjoy your Iced Watermelon Matcha Latte.

The watermelon can sit for up to a week at room temperature. After that, cut and store the watermelon in an airtight container in the fridge. It will also last for up to a week in there as well.

The minute it is cut, it will start losing liquid. The older it gets and the longer it sits the less juicer it will be.

What is Matcha

Matcha is filled with essential antioxidants and processed by finely grinding whole leaf green tea. As opposed to soaking the leaves in water how you would normally prepare a traditional green tea, by blending these leaves into a powder you're consuming all the amazing nutrients at their most potent potential.

Matcha's naturally occurring caffeine levels provide a clean and sustained energy boost without the coffee crash making it the perfect morning drink or afternoon pick-me-up. Matcha is also rich in L-Theanine, an amino acid that works to promote a brain function, concentration, and sense of calmness without the nervous energy or jitters.*

Matcha is also packed with amazing benefits for our skin with its anti-inflammatory properties that work to fight against redness, wrinkles, and skin damage.* That's why we love it so much in our Iced Watermelon Matcha Lattes

Ingredients Needed to Make a Watermelon Iced Matcha Latte

1/2 cup cubed watermelon: We used fresh watermelon but frozen would work just as good too as long as you are blending in a mixture beforehand (more information on that below).

2 tsp Copina Co. Plant-based Matcha Beauty Collagen Powder: A light and creamy plant-based collagen powder that promotes natural collagen production to encourage healthy hair, skin, nails, and joints.

1/4 cup plant milk of choice (optional): We’re partial to oat milk at Copina Co, but as always, any milk could be used.

Ice: For extra freshness

1/2 cup hot water: To help enhance the deep and aromatic matcha powder flavor. By frothing in hot water, the richness is brought out as well as the amazing beauty-boosting and energizing benefits are able to be activated.

How to Make a Watermelon Iced Matcha Latte

First, cut your watermelon into small chunks. You can either puree chunks in a blender or place at the bottom of your cup and mash with a fork. Blending will create a smoother texture (that won’t get stuck in your straw) and mashing will resemble more of a bob texture.

The layer with the most sugar goes at the bottom of a layered drink. In this case, it’s the watermelon, so pour mixture at the bottom of your glass then pour ice and milk on top.

Next, to create a smooth matcha whisk Matcha Beauty with hot water until completely dissolved and no visible clumps remain. We recommend blending with a hand frother or vigorously stirring with a whisk.

With the sweetness of the watermelon, no added sugar is needed.

Top your glass off with matcha mixture, stir with a straw, and enjoy!
