Matcha and coffee are usually pitted against each other, but we don’t see why you can’t enjoy both of these energy-boosting beverages. Both matcha and coffee have multiple health-promoting effects and share multiple benefits. While both contain caffeine, matcha contains the antioxidant epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which research shows can improve signs of aging.* Coffee is also rich in antioxidants but in the form of chlorogenic acid (CGA), which has been shown to reduce blood pressure and regulate blood sugar levels.*
In addition to being tasty, both of these morning pick-me-ups are loaded with antioxidants, which are beneficial compounds that can mitigate the harmful effects of oxidative stress on the body.* Both EGCG and CGA are rich in polyphenols, which are a group of potent antioxidants that are primarily found in vegetables, fruits, tea leaves, and coffee beans. Not to mention that the caffeine and L-Theanine found in coffee and matcha may provide you with a mood boost, improved attention, memory, and reaction times. There are a few key differences between the glorious green tea and a simple cup of joe. First and foremost, matcha is made by taking whole green tea leaves and grinding them into a fine powder, which when combined with hot water, creates an earthy, slightly sweet tea. However, unlike traditional tea that is prepared by steeping leaves in water, matcha allows you to consume the tea leaf in its whole form, thus providing myriad health benefits, including up to 137 times more antioxidants than brewed green tea. There’s a lot of punch packed into those tiny leaves!
Matcha tea leaves are traditionally grown in Japan, where farmers carefully regulate the sunlight exposure, allowing the leaves to develop higher amounts of chlorophyll and caffeine, giving them a more potent flavor and vibrant color. These leaves are then dried, de-vined, de-stemmed, and dried before finally being stone-ground into the beautifully bright powder we’ve come to love.
To prepare matcha powder, traditionally a small amount of matcha is sifted into a small, shallow bowl along with a small amount of hot water (no warmer than 175 degrees Fahrenheit to avoid scalding the tea) and is then whisked with a bamboo matcha whisk into a smooth paste. Then, more water is added to the paste and the mixture is whisked in an “m” motion to fully incorporate the powder and create a velvety foam texture. This concentrated matcha can then be added to your favorite milk for a latte or further diluted and enjoyed plain.
Coffee, on the other hand, is actually a seed that comes from a specific type of berry. Yes, you heard us right: coffee beans actually come from a fruit. In order to access the beans, the fruit of the coffee berry is removed and the beans are harvested and dried. It can take around two weeks for the beans to fully dry, during which they are turned to allow for even drying. At this stage, the coffee beans are still “green” and cannot be used to prepare coffee.
The green coffee beans must undergo the process of roasting, which requires the perfect combination of timing and temperature to produce the desired flavor of the beans. How strong the coffee’s flavor greatly depends on how the beans are roasted, with longer roasting times resulting in more intense flavor. Once the beans are roasted, they are then ground and can be used in a multitude of ways to prepare your perfect cup of coffee. Pour-over, drip, and french press are all popular methods to craft a delicious morning brew.
