5 Natural Face Mask Recipes for Glowing Skin

We all need a reminder to take a little extra time to be nice to ourselves these days. Face masks (no, not those face masks) are a great way to invite relaxation and self-care into your day and are a perfect way to show yourself you care. These DIY face masks are made of all natural ingredients that help to promote glowing, radiant skin, and most can be made with items you probably already have in your fridge and pantry. Ingredients like turmeric, honey, and matcha that we add to our favorite lattes are also superfoods for your skin, and we're here to show you a few combinations that are sure to give your skin a healthy boost.

Turmeric, Honey, & Yogurt Mask

Ingredients:

  • 2 large spoonfuls plain organic Greek or plant yogurt made with an active culture
  • 1 teaspoon manuka honey
  • 1/4 tsp organic turmeric powder

Directions:

In a small bowl, mix ingredients until smooth and evenly combined. Apply to your face and let sit until the mixture begins to harden, around 20 minutes. Rinse off with lukewarm water and pat face dry. Be sure to use a dark towel and wash your hands after applying as turmeric can leave stains!

This mask was one of our founder Carolyn's favorites during her acne journey, as it targets hyperpigmentation and uneven texture.

Turmeric is a natural antioxidant, so that means that it has been shown to help fight acne-causing bacteria on your face. Research says that it can help curb melanin production and fight hyperpigmentation, two major causes of acne scarring. It’s also a member of the ginger family, making it an amazing natural anti-inflammatory.*

The base of this mask is Greek yogurt, which contains exfoliating lactic acid. This clears away dead skin, promotes moisturization, and diminishes scars, lines, or wrinkles that may appear due to acne. Plant yogurt will have a similar effect as long as live cultures are included. The addition of manuka honey will help to lock in natural moisture, providing a healthy glow and giving your skin a more supple, bouncy feeling. Even better, Manuka honey is a proven anti-bacterial, so this mask is really giving breakouts a 1-2 punch.*

Matcha, Avocado, & Cucumber Mask

Ingredients:

  • Half an avocado
  • 1/4 cucumber
  • 1 tsp matcha powder

Directions:

Add avocado, cucumber, and matcha powder to a blender and blend until smooth and uniform. Transfer to a small bowl and then apply to the face. Let the mask absorb for up to 15 minutes, then rinse with lukewarm water and pat face dry.

The combination of matcha, cucumber and avocado in this mask creates a cooling, balancing effect that will leave your skin feeling fresh and clean. Cucumber contains mostly water, which has been shown to help to hydrate your skin, as well as ample amounts of vitamin C that can help to even skin tone and minimize breakouts.*

When skin is dry it often leads to an overproduction of oils that can clog pores and lead to increased breakouts. Avocado contains natural hydrating oils and is rich in oleic acid, which will help moisturize dry skin and balance natural oil production.*

One of our favorite ingredients, matcha, is naturally rich in chlorophyll, which is high in vitamins and antioxidants that can promote glowing skin and fight inflammation.* You can read all about the skincare benefits of matcha here!

We also recommend whipping up a Matcha Coffee Latte to fit the vibe of this mask.

Cacao, Papaya, & Aloe Mask

Ingredients:

  • 1 tbsp of cacao powder
  • 1/4 cup papaya puree (you can sub pumpkin or mango puree for a similar effect if you can’t find papaya)
  • 1-2 tbsp of natural, dye-free Aloe Vera gel

Directions:

Add all ingredients to a bowl and stir well- make sure your papaya (or fruit of choice) puree is smooth for the best results. Apply to your face and allow to sit for 10 minutes, then then rinse with lukewarm water and pat face dry.

The Aloe Vera plant is naturally brimming with vitamins A, C, E, B1, B2, B3, B6 and B12, giving it a clear advantage on the skincare front. Aloe has been known to soothe irritated skin, and the natural moisture in aloe vera gel can leave skin feeling hydrated and bouncy.* When paired up with papaya - which is packed with all-natural exfoliating enzymes that help to dissolve dead skin cells- this mask is super-effective but also soothing enough that those with sensitive skin can still reap the benefits.*

Cacao powder works wonders for the skin, too. Cacao can help to reduce redness and inflammation caused by acne thanks to its abundance of natural antioxidants. Plus, the caffeine and theobromine found in cacao powder has been shown to help to make the skin feel firm, tight and toned.* If you curious about the differences between cacao and cocoa, you can read more here!

Oatmeal, Avocado, & Honey Mask

Ingredients:

  • ½ Avocado, mashed
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 2-3 tbsp oats (quick-cut, rolled oats, or oat bran works best)

Directions:

Mix all ingredients in a small bowl and apply an even layer to your face (or only on areas that are especially dry- up to you!). Leave it on for 15-20 minutes, then rinse off with lukewarm water and pat face dry.

Combining honey and avocado has been shown to help the skin retain moisture without leaving your face feeling greasy or oily. Honey is a natural humectant, meaning it draws moisture into the skin, trapping and sealing it to leave skin hydrated and supple.* Honey also has been shown to help heal acne scarring due to its natural anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory effects, and oatmeal has been shown to strengthen the skin's barrier, soothing and moisturizing the skin.*

If you’re really into oats, you should definitely pour yourself an Oat Milk Vanilla Beauty Latte for an extra creamy treat.

Spirulina, Honey, & Yogurt Mask

Ingredients:

  • 1 tsp Spirulina
  • 1 tsp raw or manuka honey
  • 1 large spoonful whole milk greek yogurt

This has been Carolyn’s go-to DIY mask for months now, especially when her skin is feeling dull and clogged. This vibrant green mask is perfect for cleansing and promoting a healthy bacterial balance to your skin. Spirulina's anti-inflammatory properties help reduce swelling, acne and prevent further breakouts.*

Greek yogurt contains lactic acid which results in a visible difference to your skin by removing dull surface cells on your face to reveal newer, brighter ones. Manuka honey can improve your skin's appearance by balancing your skin's pH level and help slough away dead cell debris to keep your skin clean. Its anti-inflammatory effect can decrease local inflammation caused by acne. As an antibacterial, Manuka honey leaves fewer bacteria to infect pores and cause acne. This mask will leave your skin feeling fresh and rejuvenated.

Directions:

Mix all ingredients in a small bowl until well-combined and apply to skin. Leave on for up to 20 minutes, then rinse with lukewarm water and pat face dry.
